“Leather” is not one surface.
a scratch in stable leather, a failed topcoat and peeling bonded material can look similar from a distance. they do not lead to the same repair decision.
01 / compare the surface
Genuine leather
Natural grain, creasing and variation can remain visible. Local color wear, dry areas, surface scratches and some tears may be repairable when the base stays strong.
Coated or protected leather
A manufactured finish controls color and sheen. Wear may affect the coating before the leather base, so the surrounding finish has to be matched carefully.
Bonded or synthetic surface
Peeling or flaking may show that the upper film is separating across a wider area. A small visible spot does not always describe the full failure.
02 / find the label
Look under, behind and between.
Material information may sit under a removable cushion, beneath the frame, on the back panel or inside the purchase documents. Photograph it if it is easy to reach. Do not dismantle the furniture.
03 / read the damage
What the edge can reveal.
- thin flakes
- may point to a failing upper film or finish
- pale line
- may be color loss on a stable surface
- open edge
- shows backing access, tension and missing material
- darkened zone
- can involve oils, soil, moisture or previous products
These signs are useful context, not a remote guarantee. Material construction and stability are confirmed in person before the repair approach is agreed.
